The ION 3 connects wirelessly to your smartphone, PC, or VR/AR headset via Bluetooth, and includes several scent cartridges. The company’s “ION Scentware” catridges work by combining aromas in different combinations to create thousands of unique scents meant to evoke different moods and emotions based on the game you’re playing (for example, smelling smoke or burnt marshmallows around a crackling camfire).
While so-called “smell-o-vision” has been primarily seen as a novelty innovation meant for theme parks, the ION 3 shows that scent technology is an important, underrated, piece of the augemented reality puzzle, a step towards eventually created a truly immersive virtual experience."
